Alex Schweder La (New York City, 1970) and Khadija Carroll La (Melbourne, 1980) live and work together in Berlin and Cambridge. In their collaborations the La’s create installations that provoke audiences into becoming Performing Viewers. The social and psychological shifts in the participants’ views are recorded in their buildings, performances, videos, and scripts. These stem from the La’s individual practices in performance art and architecture, conceptualism and poetry. They have been shown, respectively, in the 51st Venice Biennale, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, New York’s Sculpture Center, Sydney Biennale, ICA Philadelphia, Ecole des beaux-arts de Cherbourg-Octeville, Harvard’s GSD, Berlin’s Magnus Muller Gallery, Scope Basel, and the deCordova Museum. The La’s co-publications include ‘Object to Project’ and ‘Wer performt Kunst? Die performenden Betrachterinnen’, and they teach at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. The Chinati Foundation, American Academy in Rome, The Pollock Krasner Foundation, The Graham Foundation, Arts Victoria, Humboldt Foundation, and Newton Trust among others have funded their projects.
